Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF HORMONES

Hormones are chemical messengers made by your body’s endocrine glands. These glands secrete hormones into the bloodstream, which carries them to every cell of your body where they exert their effects.

Hormones regulate your growth, level of energy, sexual characteristics, reproductive capabilities, brain function, digestion and synthesis of sugar, and they enable the cells of your body to perform their activities. When your body no longer produces an adequate supply of hormones your health declines, various systems in your body start to struggle and shut down. If not properly managed your health will decline. However, your health can be restored by replenishing your declining hormone levels with natural, bio-identical hormones.

WHAT ARE BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES?

Natural bio-identical hormones come from a molecule in plants - specifically soy beans and yams. This molecule, Diosgenin is extracted from these plants and converted into progesterone, the three human estrogen hormones — estrone, estradiol, and estriol — and also human testosterone, cortisol, dihydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and pregnenolone for use in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Structurally they are exactly the same as human hormones, hence the term bio ‘identical’, and have long been studied and used throughout Europe. The term “bio-identical” refers to the fact that these hormone molecules are exactly the same as those that are produced by the human body down to the molecular level, and are therefore identical in action

On the other hand, synthetic hormones come from the urine of a female horse. Their structure is adjusted slightly so that the brand can be controlled and patented. In this way only one company can produce that particular hormone. Familiar branded hormones are: Prempro and Premarin.

WHAT IS HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)?

Hormone Replacement Therapy is a method of treating hormone imbalances caused by decreasing hormone levels as we age. In women, HRT includes the introduction of estrogen, progesterone and occasionally testosterone to balance and offset the symptoms of menopause which can include hot flashes, depression, lack of energy, loss of sexual desire, joint pain and insomnia. HRT can also be used to treat decreased testosterone levels in men who often experience loss of sexual function, loss of lean muscle mass and increased body fat as they age. Custom HRT is a beneficial way of distributing the correct amount of hormones for each individual's needs.
