What is High Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a substance that is carried through your blood, attached to proteins. When the levels of the different types of cholesterol are out of balance, this can lead to high cholesterol, which in turn can lead to atherosclerosis, a dangerous condition in which cholesterol and other proteins can block your arteries. These blockages can lead to chest pain, heart attack and even stroke. High cholesterol has no symptoms, and a blood test is the only way to detect high cholesterol.
How will we determine if I have high cholesterol?
Dr. Cohen believes that high cholesterol can be treated with integrative medicine, and that she can help her patients avoid the regimen of prescriptions that traditional medicine uses to treat high cholesterol (and their side effects). Dr. Cohen will perform blood and hormone tests to determine the nature of the patient’s condition, and then develop a treatment recommendation that may include changes in diet, increase in exercise, strategies to ensure proper hydration, supplements such as garlic, ginger and green tea, and in some cases, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
