What is Yeast Syndrome / Candida?

YEAST SYNDROME/CANDIDA

Candida is a fungus (a form of yeast), and a very small amount of it lives in your mouth and intestines. Its job is to aid with digestion and nutrient absorption but, when overproduced, candida breaks down the wall of the intestine and penetrates the bloodstream, releasing toxic byproducts into your body. This can lead to many different health problems, ranging from digestive issues to depression.

The healthy bacteria in your gut typically keep your candida levels in check. However, several factors can cause the candida population to get out of hand. Eating a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar or consuming a lot of alcohol can “feed the yeast” and lead to an overgrowth. Taking oral contraceptives, eating a diet high in beneficial fermented foods like kombucha, sauerkraut and pickles and living a stressful lifestyle can also lead to an improper balance of candida.  Also, taking antibiotics can in some cases kill too many of those friendly bacteria, and give candida and opportunity to grow.

How will we determine if I have yeast syndrome/Candida?

Dr. Cohen specializes in diagnostic testing, and may perform blood, stool or urine tests to determine if there is a candida overgrowth in the body. In order to treat the overgrowth, Dr. Cohen may determine that it is appropriate for the patient to change his or her diet to a low carbohydrate diet. Sugar is what feeds yeast, so eliminating sugar in all of its simple forms like candy, desserts, alcohol and flours. She may also prescribe an antifungal medication and probiotic supplements to aid in the process of rebalancing the “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut.
